#AskGaryVee Episode 90: Facebook Video Views, Leaving the Family Business, & eBay
#QOTD: I need YOUR eBay story. Go in depth. I’m reading all the comments this weekend.
#TIMESTAMPS
1:39 – Will people pay to have questions answered by experts through live video apps, like Fountain?
4:59 – What 3 questions do you most commonly ask your clients when meeting them for the first time?
8:31 – 3 seconds counting as a view for Facebook video…moderately misleading metric or incredibly bullshit metric?
10:12 – What’s your best piece of advice for a first generation American entrepreneur, venturing out on her own, away from her family business?
12:40 – Do you think eBay will become irrelevant if they don’t innovate?

People will pay for anything…if they perceive it has value. If there was an #AskGaryVee Show in 1967 and I got a question like this, I’d say something like “Hey groovy cats, it’s the AskGaryVee Show. Dawn, your question is like asking if people will pay for water. No way!” That would be the WRONG answer. What happened was that Poland Springs, and probably a lot of brands before Poland Springs, came along and convinced people that bottled water had value. Here’s a fun weekend activity: go ask your grandparents what they thought about the idea of people paying for water.
In fact, think about how you feel. A bottle of water in an airport? We’ve all done it. It’s an absolute brain twist.
So yes, people will pay for answers from experts on live streaming apps. Even though you can watch now for free, people will stay end up paying down the road.
Now the question is: are you good enough to charge people? Have you built up equity? Have you put in the WORK?
And more importantly, how many people have built up that presence and have the charisma and ability to charge per answer.
The people that have pulled it off have had to be in an interesting part of their career, or they really enjoyed it. I love Q&As so much that I do this show for me. Do you have the chops to make it happen for you?

#QOTD: I need YOUR eBay story. Go in depth. I’m reading all the comments
this weekend.
I got in on eBay early. I was a seller who sold tutorials on how to make
money on ebay…. I would buy tutorials and turn around and resell them.
And I would sell all of the tutorials together for the same price that
others were selling just one tutorial. I did try to do some of the
tutorials and some were successful… BUT NONE WERE AS SUCCESSFUL AS
SELLING THE TUTORIALS THEMSELVES… which I thought it was interesting… I
eventually realized I made more money in other ways so I moved on…. I
never really used ebay to buy anything except watches.

Wow Gary thanks so much for covering my question. I completely agree, I
believe someone will fill the market with what eBay use to be. The online
garage sale that everyone loved so much. Also your beard is getting mean
:D.

+Gary Vaynerchuk Maybe YardSale was too much ahead of the curve? Before
its time? You should resurrect that!

#QotD I started selling on eBay 5-6 years ago specializing in retro video
games. I used it as a great source of extra income for the entire 5 years
while I worked as a chef. I decided 6 months ago to leave my job and go
full time on eBay and Amazon. Now I am reselling full time on both
platforms and doing well. I document all of my successes and failures
through youtube and one of the questions I consistently get is about eBay
going downhill. Many sellers feel eBay has been limiting their success
recently with the new fee structure and gear towards new merchandise. That
is why I submitted the question.

#QOTD: Used it to buy stuff a couple years ago, tried selling stuff on it
recently with minimal success. Really don’t use it a whole lot anymore.

“wudder” love how you say water. xoxo

I would be afraid of you throwing a ball around the office. If you have a
moment of intensity, I could see you throwing that at someone or something.

Thank you for the A to my Q!! As for ebay I actually used it circa
2005-2006 to sell items that were not selling in my physical brick and
mortar store Bella Dawn in Jersey. It was a great way to liquidate. I use
Poshmark app now to sell gently used fashion items I have. Love it more
than ebay because it is immediate no auction and people can put in an offer
if they want to negotiate price. :)

I don’t believe that everybody has to put in 18 hour days where every
minute is spent hustling to become successful within their own
business/start up. Tim Ferris and he’s books are a great example of this.
Personally I wouldn’t want to sacrifice the things that keep me mentally
and physically performing at my best like exercising, reading and learning
new languages and skills. That will all take hours out of my day but I
still truly believe I can become successful within my next big ventures
while still doing those things.

#QOTD as a kid I was into Trading Card Games: Magic the Gathering etc.. and
I would buy and sell on Ebay and I was able to be profitable on my hobbies
that way. I also thought it was important to game your hobbies and make
them break even or profitable if you can. I’ve recently gotten back into
Ebay but for their affiliate model, so now I’m leveraging my product
reviews on things using Ebay and Amazon Affiliate links. I’m the kind of
person who can/will monetize everything.
I refuse to get back into video games until I can monetize it. Which I do
have a plan for so I could turn those two hours a week into cash on the
back end.

GV! Your #QOTD just reminded me of my first real entrepreneurial venture.
Back in 2000-2003 (while in college) I used to buy and sell cell phones on
eBay. I figured out you could buy a SIM card that was unlocked for any SIM
card enabled phone. So I’d always have the first used versions of early
“smartphones” to sell on eBay. Sadly it was a break even business since I
always ended up buying more and more expensive and harder to get cell
phones from around the world. I do remember being the first in my group of
friends to have a Samsung flip phone with a rotating camera on it. I wish I
still had some of those photos from that phone, hah.
Keep being you my friend!
Also, you still owe me a game of 1-on-1. ;)

Is it me or do you get a little sad every time Gary mentions the show
possibly coming to an end?
April 17, 2015 @ 7:19 pm
The outro’s in this and the last episode are “sick” by the way. Love it.

I’m banned for life for not paying $8 in fees on time :/
I can only blame my slacker 16 year old self back in 2003 lol fortunately I
learned how to be somewhat responsible since then
April 17, 2015 @ 10:12 pm
great video but the guy in the background at 10 minutes that kept trying on
different coats severely distracted me

My first “business” was selling watches on Ebay while I was in college. I
found a company that would dropship them, and I just promoted them and
would only buy them when an order came through. I started making about 200
bucks a week, but after a month or so I made 2 grand a week for a couple of
weeks in a row. I thought I’d made it and that I was going to be a
millionaire so I dropped out of school. Then I got a couple of negative
reviews in a row (because the dropshipping company missed some deliveries),
and my “business” vanished overnight. Back to college it is then!

Hey Gary! Congratulations on surpassing Daily Grape!
April 18, 2015 @ 12:15 am
I started on Ebay about 4 years ago, since then I have sold vintage
cameras, cigar boxes, Bitcoins (for two horrible weeks), textbooks, and a
bunch of random stuff that I found at garage sales. I think the most
interesting thing I found and sold was some Leather Tapaderos
Besides a selling platform ebay is definitely the best place to find the
odd ball items, I have used it many times to do just that
April 18, 2015 @ 1:02 am
About seven years ago I sold old bills, stopped doing it after
understanding it wasn’t as fun for me as I thought … But I do still buy
there.
April 18, 2015 @ 2:40 am
Few years ago, I opened an account to buy cheap equipment for my home
studio. Five years ago, discovered longboarding, I first tried to buy somme
cheap parts on eBay, then discovered to buy in bulk and resale was cheaper.
It was a small hobby operation until recently. Now I am aiming to turn it
into a real business. It is true Ebay fees are a problem but Ebay has
revised its fees.
April 18, 2015 @ 4:10 am
Great show as always Gary. I watch your show in the morning and it gets me
fired up and ready to hustle! Just the inspiration I need for starting my
business. I hope you reach episode 1000!

Beardilocs at 9:20 maybe my favorite background player to date
#QOTD Joined in mid 2004, kicked around with it for a bit while working
50-60hr a week running my HVAC company.
Really started hard core buying used high end production audio gear from
Craigslist and some yard sales to resale on Ebay in 2006.
Did that in my spare time for 1 1/2 years and made really good money.
I actually quite not because of Ebay but because my local market tightened
their pockets and it became much more difficult to buy high end gear at a
low enough investment to resale.

I keep watching this show because of the hilariously awesome BW cuts.
